Shawn Brown was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland and has been a professional musician for the past 30 years. As a child, guidance from an equally talented mother taught him the fundamentals of music. Making Tampa, Florida home since 1980, Shawn played with ‘Blackstar’ who scored a local hit with “Animal Attraction” and toured Japan in “The Precision Band.”
He has opened for Howard Hewitt, Roger & Zapp, and Stephanie Mills. Shawn also has shared the stage with Al Green, Clarence Clemons, Christopher Cross, Earth Wind & Fire, Keith Sweat, Ronnie Earl, Lucky Peterson, Little Milton and Percy Sledge.
Shawn cites his main influences in music as Donny Hathaway, Stevie Wonder,
Billy Preston and George Benson.
Shawn’s extreme passion for music has led him to do a variety of events in the gospel, jazz and charity arena. Although nonprofit organizations have always
been a part of his dream, Shawn began to focus more on charity events in 2010.
Between the months of November 2008 and April 2010, Shawn battled cancer and furthermore lost a brother to this ever spreading sickness. These heartrending events aroused Shawn’s inner dream and he decided now was the time. ”I want to use my talents and my music to help people who suffer from cancer“. He began to use his gifts to partner with people and organizations that would help save the lives of others – The New Year’s Eve Gala is the kickoff to this lifelong vision followed by the New Day Festival taking place in April 2011 for the Gulfcoast Oncology Foundation.
Shawn has been with Big Boss Records for the past 12 years. He has received various awards such as the Real Blues Best Blues Vocalist Award for the Ribs Are Ready, the National Blues Market, and the Golden Brush Strokes (Artist with a Heart, 2009). He also has two soundtrack appearances from the same album in the award winning movie Tully. Shawn can also be heard on the new album, “Best Blues Money Can Buy” with the title song co-written by Shawn and Lomax.
“This has got to be one of the greatest projects because it has a mixture of Gospel, Jazz and Blues concentrated into a blues.” Additional releases includes the solo cd, “Made in the Shade” – Paris, France.
